(House District 74) — Alfonso “Poncho” Nevárez, the Democratic nominee for House District 74, announced today that his campaign for re-election raised nearly $14,000 in contributions during the recent 42-day campaign finance reporting period, bringing his 2012 total to approximately $73,600.
Last year, Nevárez raised another $30,000 for his election effort, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Texas Ethics Commission.
Nevárez said he achieved his fundraising goals thanks to the diverse support of educators and advocates for public schools, local and Texas business owners, community and civic leaders, friends and family.
“I am humbled to have the support of so many in District 74 and in Austin,” he said. “This level of support is a testament to the hard work we’ve put into the campaign and to the scores of meetings and listening sessions all across our enormous district.”
Nevárez’s opponent in November, a perennial candidate on the GOP ticket, reported raising just over $5,700 in the same period, including $3,500 from his father.
Nevárez is a former Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustee with a deep understanding of the need for solid and sustainable public education. From 2005-2009, he served as a Trustee on the Eagle Pass ISD Board, and played a key role in increasing the number of the district’s schools rated “Exemplary” by the state.
“There is a great need for leadership in our state, especially when it comes to education,” Nevárez said. “People know I’m the candidate who will fight to keep our schools funded, keep class sizes manageable and retain good teachers, and they have promoted me to do the job.”
Nevárez earned endorsements from the Parent PAC of Texas, which defends public schools, by the Texas State Teachers Association, the Texas AFL-CIO labor organization, the Del Rio News-Herald and the Texas Association of REALTORS. Last month, he easily won the Democratic Party’s nomination despite two challengers.
