Poncho Nevárez

State Representative District 74

Alfonso “Poncho” Nevárez was born and raised in Eagle Pass, Texas. His father, a post office worker, and his mother, an office assistant, raised Poncho, along with his two sisters, instilling in them the importance of hard work. Poncho was a two-year letterman in track and graduated high school in 1990.

While attending UT Austin, working towards a degree in Government, Poncho worked part-time and became the first in his family to graduate from college in 1994. From 1994-1996, he took graduate courses in business administration at Texas A&M International University. In 1999 Poncho graduated from St. Mary’s School of Law in San Antonio and started his career as an attorney.

In Eagle Pass, Poncho has a successful law practice of ten employees, specializing in personal injury litigation. Each year he devotes a great deal of time providing free legal services to the needy and elderly. From 2005-2009, he served on the Maverick County Tax Appraisal District and as a Trustee on the Eagle Pass ISD School Board.

Poncho Nevárez is currently serving his second term as the State Representative for House District 74. In his first term, during the 83rd Legislative Session, he passed several important pieces of legislation, including House Bill 908 helping to protect and ensure the safety of the elderly and disabled and also joint-authored House Bill 1597 providing veterans with the opportunity to make installment payments on their property taxes.

During the interim Rep. Nevárez was appointed to the Economic Development Committee as well as the Select Committee to Study Ethics Laws. After taking the oath of office for the 84th Legislative Session Rep. Nevárez was appointed to the Local and Consent Calendars Committee, Natural Resources Committee, and Vice-Chair of the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee.

Poncho is passionate about supporting and funding public education, border infrastructure, and fighting to represent the rights of the underserved. In 2013, he was humbled to be named Freshman of the Year by his colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus and was honored again in 2015 when he was elected Vice-Chair of the caucus.

Poncho and his wife, Rossy Guadarrama de Nevárez, are the proud parents of three children, Renata, Rominna, and Alfonso Hernan (Ponchito). The family attends Our Lady of Refuge Church in Eagle Pass.
